Essay / Interns' Perceptions and Experiences in the...
Background of the StudyInternship is an experience that requires the practical application of theory or conceptual knowledge (Garthwait, 2010). Students and teachers alike have recognized the crucial role it plays in applying what is learned in the classroom to real world situations, problems and concerns. Most professional courses offered by schools and universities include an internship as part of the program. In the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education issued Memorandum Order 23 which sets out the guidelines for the subject of student internship program (www.ched.gov.ph accessed 2014). These guidelines specify what a student should expect to learn and acquire during and after the internship. First, the internship program aims to provide tertiary students enrolled in tertiary institutions in the Philippines with the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge, skills as well as desirable attitudes and values in institutions/industries renowned in our country. This means that students enrolled in this program have the chance to learn techniques and abilities through their internship. Students can gain practical knowledge through the application of theoretical concepts learned in school. Then they will learn proper etiquette and work attitude. Secondly, it aims to improve students' professional skills and discipline in dealing with people in the workplace. During the internship, as they interact with the office staff, they can learn something from them and help them improve their professional skills and self-discipline. Third, it promotes the competitiveness of students through their training. It encourages students to develop their competitiveness from the actual training they have acquired from their degree......in the middle of their studies......and to perform well, so that they can have much better rewards. Students who are horrible at their work and are punished for getting a bad grade will probably do better at getting a reward for a higher grade. Operational definition of terms1.
