  • Essay / EU relations with Turkey - 2879

If the European Union (EU) is considered a sui generis organization on the international stage, it is not surprising that it has a sui generis candidate for be part of it. Turkey's case for EU membership is one of a kind in EU history, as the Turks are the longest-serving candidate champions. Perhaps this fact alone does not explain the uniqueness of Turkey-EU relations, but when examining the details of this fraught love affair, other features can be identified. This paper focuses only on the foreign and security policy dimension, namely the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Turkey's relationship with the EU's CFSP has sparked much debate among academics. Many have tried to explain the reasons and motivations why Turkey should participate? (Blockmans 2010, Doğan 2002, Ruacan 2007) or why is it beneficial for the EU and also for Turkey? (Demiralp, Baç 2008) These debates are very influential and useful in making sense of Turkey's problematic case, but they do not necessarily help us understand the real question of why Turkey participates or chooses to participate in the CFSP of the EU? brief theoretical discussion of rationalist and constructivist explanations of state socialization, where the possibilities of both logics meet, then continue with the argument that "superficial 'following' of norms need not come from the ambition of the State to reduce the costs of socialization of the State. socialization as discussed by Diez and Schimmelfenning.
