Essay / What is Pure Beauty? - 1524
Everyone has their own idea of what pure beauty is. According to Webster's Dictionary, the definition of beauty is "the quality or collection of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasantly exalts the mind or spirit" ("Beauty" ). However, the definition of pure beauty has been distorted and manipulated to become a standard that only a select few can achieve. However, beauty goes far beyond what's behind the counter and the computer. With these high standards set by society, many women have false ideals about what is truly beautiful due to the increased use of Photoshop programs, the willingness to put themselves in harm's way under a surgeon's scalpel, and many now spend hundreds of dollars each year on cosmetics in order to capture these unattainable stereotypes. According to an anonymous photo retoucher, every image used in advertising has been retouched, whether it's features like skin, curves or hair, the industry is simply redefining the models' appearance to match to their own definition of beauty. It's no longer just about hiding acne or blemishes, models are now sporting smaller bodies or being fattened up to appear healthier. (“100 percent”). Even though as a society we realize that there is Photoshop behind the images, the extent to which Ashbaugh 2 is applied is what is not recognized.
