Essay / Richard Nixon - 598
Richard M. NixonNixon was a brilliant student and although he struggled growing up, he was very dedicated to what he did and had a bright future. At the age of 17, Nixon first attended Whittier College in September 1930. He particularly enjoyed his student government classes and was even elected student class president, which led him to become involved in politics. After graduating from college, Nixon enlisted in the Navy. He served on a naval air transport and was promoted to lieutenant commander before the end of the war (World Book, Inc. page 434). After his service in the Navy, Nixon ran for office in Congress. He campaigned and told the people that Voorhis, his competitor, was a communist; he won the election without a doubt. Now as a U.S. representative, he supported the Marshal Plan and other foreign aid programs (page 434). Nixon was doing very well and was at the peak of his career. He then ran for U.S. senator in 1950 and won by more than 700,000 votes (page 435). During these elections, he accused his competitors of associating with the communists; even though there has been no real verification of these accusations. People saw him as a strong Republican with good intentions for our country. Having the people's attention was a good thing, but he didn't always have it. For a time, while he was running for vice president with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, their Democratic opponents accused them of spending their campaign funds on their personal interests (page 435). People believed that Nixon could ruin Eisenhower's chances of winning the election and wanted him out of the campaign. On September 23, 1952, Nixon announced on television and radio his personal finances, proving that he did not have us...... middle of paper...... nuclear weapons (page 437). At that time, pollution was affecting their water, land, and animals, so Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency. Also as president; Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first astronauts to set foot on the Moon, while in space Nixon told them: "Because of what you have done, the heavens are now part of man's world." (NASA Administrator Brian Dunbar, NASA Official).
