  • Essay / Symbolism of Queen Elizabeth - 1440

It can be noticed that in the image the clouds part not only to shine on Elizabeth in battle, but also to cover the fleet of the Spanish Armada in clouds dark, as if to hint at what is going to happen and who will be the true champion of the battle. In the actual battle with the Spanish Armada the entire Spanish fleet is destroyed by the turbulent seas, this was seen as God crushing the Spanish through nature and overall showing that God favored Protestant England over the Catholic Spain. This battle would prove to the world that God favored England led by Elizabeth by granting her victory in her efforts against her enemies. It could also be said that where the horse crushes the demon while Elizabeth simultaneously saves the Truth, a Protestant leader fights for truth against evil. It can be clearly understood that Protestantism is God's favorite religion and furthermore, Elizabeth is the chosen ruler of the country.
