Essay / Malaysian Independence Essay - 1464
MALAYSIAN INDEPENDENCEMalaysia is a country located in Southeast Asia. Every August 31, Malaysians celebrate their Independence Day. Before gaining independence, Malaysia was under foreign rule for 446 years (1511-1957), first by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, then the British and finally the Japanese. The colonialists' attempt to control the country's economy and politics, imposition of taxes, violation of local customs and practices, arrogance and coercion gave local citizens reasons to rise up against foreign masters . Basically, the struggle for the country's independence can be divided into two phases: the struggle through bloodshed and the struggle through negotiation. The bloody struggle took place when the people were under the yoke of the colonialists. In the 20th century, citizens were already exposed to external struggles for independence and many people had received formal education, so the struggle became one for nationalism. Associations and the media were used as channels to express misfortunes and discontent, to stir up nationalist spirit and put pressure on the British to improve the lives of the population. However, it was not easy. A great effort was necessary to achieve freedom from foreign rulers. To be a great country, it had to go through a great process. Therefore, this essay would simply talk about the history of Malaysia before it became a well-known country. It began with the domination of the Hindu and Buddhist cultures of India in the early history of Malaysia. Due to these two influences, many kingdoms existed in the Malay Archipelagos after 1 AD, such as Kedah, Langkasuka, Srivijaya and Majapahit. A few decades later, Islam was ...... middle of paper ......m local authorities. The local population was reluctant to pay taxes to foreigners who they protested had no right to receive any tax payments. In conclusion, it was such a long and difficult road to travel. But not all the fighters gave up. They have tried to maintain what they believe to be theirs. As Independence Day is still celebrated every year, for a section of society, especially the younger generation, independence is seen as something that has always existed. They fail to understand the meaning of independence. Many among them are unaware of the struggle of the leaders who risked their lives to defend the sovereignty of the homeland. It is better to appreciate what is given to us. Our ancestors not only fought for this country, but they also fought for us, so we will not experience the era of colonization..
