In prison, access to treatment is limited, the care inmates receive is poor, and most of the time the medical professionals in the prison are not very qualified . “In 2002, approximately 37 percent of state and prison inmates reported having a current health problem. The most commonly reported medical problems were arthritis (13%), hypertension, or more commonly known as high blood pressure (11%), asthma (10%), heart problems (6%), and kidney problems. (4%). 34% of inmates also reported having some type of physical impairment, including learning disabilities, speech impediments, hearing impairment or loss, vision or mobility impairment or loss” (Conroy ). Incarcerated women are most likely to report having suffered from some type of cancer in prison. The most common types of cancer in women were cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and breast cancer, while in men the most common types were skin cancer, cancer lung cancer, testicular cancer and colon cancer.
