  • Essay / No country has the right to possess nuclear weapons

Be it resolved that no country has the right to possess nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons cause great harm to the environment. The damage can be lasting. Some might argue that environmental damage can be justified on the grounds that it can end wars quickly and reduce death tolls, but when used to end wars quickly it still kills many numerous civilians indiscriminately. Radiation can kill many innocent people. However, the people most likely to be affected by radiation are those from the enemy country and therefore are not innocent. But many civilians who die from radiation may not agree with what their government is doing, and just because they live in an enemy country does not mean they are enemies or represent a danger to us. We shouldn't kill people based on where they live. Many countries want to join the “Nuclear Club”. They consider it prestigious. Retaining nuclear weapons encourages other countries to develop them, either for their protection or for their prestige. However, many countries will not have the means to develop weapons and many will not develop nuclear weapons simply to join a “club”. Countries should have other, stronger incentives to develop these weapons. But if some countries possess nuclear weapons, others will feel the need to develop them to protect themselves. Protection and security would be strong motivations. If unstable countries develop nuclear weapons, they will pose a global threat to everyone. However, their activities can be detected and then quickly stopped. It would be very difficult to develop nuclear weapons without detection. Unstable nations will most likely work in a secret location. By the time they are detected, they may have already developed the weapons. T...... middle of paper ......pap them and declare war on the country. Therefore, the number of deaths does not decrease and their use is unethical. By retaining nuclear weapons, nuclear war is more likely to occur. However, a nuclear war will not occur because countries will know that other countries possess these weapons and that it would be unwise to engage in these weapons. Volatile nations would be subdued by the fear of nuclear weapons. But all it would take is one nuclear missile to start a war. The war would be massive and devastating for everyone. For some countries, nuclear weapons will lull them into a false sense of invulnerability and they will not make wise decisions and engage in war anyway, resulting in deaths that could have been avoided. In conclusion, no country has the right to possess nuclear weapons. They are dangerous and should not be modified.
