It has approximately thirteen million American citizens. The state of Illinois has 102 counties, and each county operates its criminal justice system independently. Some statewide agencies have specific responsibilities. The Illinois Administrative Office of the Courts oversees the probation and court services departments. The Illinois Department of Corrections oversees state prisons and people on mandatory probation. Each county's criminal justice system is made up of a network of state and local entities. Some of these entities include the Illinois State Police, county sheriff's departments, municipal police departments, university and college police departments, and other law enforcement agencies . Circuit Clerks, County Probation and Court Services; Judges, state prosecutors, public defenders and private attorneys; Illinois Department of Corrections; County jails and municipal cells; Private social service agencies that provide crisis intervention, residential placement, employment, counseling, reentry and other services; Neighborhood-based, faith-based organization.
