    Before you can answer the question “Who owns the body?” » we must define what the body is. The spiritual way to define the body is to encompass the “soul” or “spirit” within the body. This is a deeper form of ownership in that an individual's entire being is controlled, as opposed to just their physical form. Merriam-Webster defines the body as “the entire physical being of a person or animal” (Merriam-Webster). Body fitness is a factual and concrete definition of the body, giving it more merit in society and in legal institutions. Several court cases have focused on the question of ownership of the body. Court cases constitute the main element of the history of this subject. Some cases relating to this issue include Roe v. Wade, Mohr v. Williams, and Moore v. Regents of the University of California. These cases debate an individual's right to their physical body from a medical perspective. The 1937 case Roe v. Wade is a landmark case centered on Norma L. McCorvey (Roe). According to the Lawnix Criminal Case Index, Roe “brought a class action lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Texas’ abortion laws” (Roe). The question was whether abortion laws were constitutional if they only prohibited all abortions except those that endangered the life of the mother, thus excluding Roe's desire for abortion without cause. This case concerns the issue of body ownership because it asks whether the individual, Roe, has the right to do whatever she wants with her body and abort her pregnancy, or whether the government has the right to say that 'she can't.
