Stereotypes and misconceptions are just false group assumptions. Misconceptions are just false ideals about groups that have been formed due to a lack of information about a group or false information about the group from biased individuals. While stereotypes are false presumptions of groups formed due to a small percentage in the groups that are extremely ideal and fit the stereotypical views of the group. Many members of these groups are probably furious that the mass of the public believes these stereotypes simply because of this handful of stereotypical extremists. However, many people in today's society unconsciously stereotype many groups on a daily basis due to the lack of information that is actually known about the group. An example of a group that has always been stereotyped is that smart people are supposed to be unattractive, socially excluded nerds who like reading about superheroes and are interested in science fiction, which is not TRUE. Every group or culture in society has some type of stereotype directed towards it. These stereotypes make the public view groups a certain way when in reality, they may be the exact opposite of the stereotypes. For this reason, many people still judge a group based solely on the stereotypes heard about them. This is also why many mistake people as part of a group only because individuals fit the appearance or personality stereotypes of people who should be part of that group. So, because of this, many may mistake themselves as being part of a group when in reality that individual may not be part of the group. These stereotypes also lead to many misunderstandings about which individuals are actually part of groups. The... middle of paper ...... similar to the nerd archetype, who is both ugly and smart? In contrast, what about all those beautiful, air-headed women and burly, brainless men we see on television? So of course, beauty doesn't always mean intelligence and ugliness doesn't always mean lack of intellect and vice. So individuals cannot say with certainty who is intelligent and who is not based on appearance alone. However, there is a correlation between appearance and intelligence. Many also perceive intelligent people, “nerds,” as unpopular outcasts. This is not true, many smart people are actually very popular in school and society. However, it's also those few smart people who are unpopular, but most of the time, these people are overachievers. The reason these smart, overachieving people are unpopular is because of lack of time to participate in popular activities and not because they were smart..
