Essay / Talking to Kids About Race - 856
Sometimes you assume that kids don't understand race or class issues. But we can never be sure of the external problems they will face. According to this article, they believe that talking to your children about racism in kindergarten might be a good time because it will save them from problems they might face later in life. It's never too early to explain to them that other people might act differently toward them because they are racist. You don't want your child to feel worthless or hurt, just like Marley and her experience during recess. She had no idea this was going to happen because her school is diverse, but the majority of students are still white. First of all, Marley was just a normal little girl playing with Billy, a white girl, and the other girls she was. with. Billy told her he was afraid of her because she was black. Marley couldn't believe she was hearing because she had assumed that there weren't people who saw her that way anymore since her family had taught her better. Billy points out to her that because of her race, she was inferior to her and that it was okay to be afraid. This playtime issue deals with the socially constructed nature of race and how others perceive you. Critical race theory focuses on race as the primary cause of racism and discrimination. White people believe they are superior to other races because of the color of their skin. Therefore, it makes them think that there is nothing wrong with them being racist. In Marley's interview, she describes how scared the little girl was when she approached. Like she was going to kill her or something. This is a problem that little kids shouldn't have to deal with... middle of paper... it's going to kill her or something. This is a problem that small children should not face. They should all be able to get along and not think about their color. In this case, it's Billy's parents (white girl) who need to teach her better and not give her all this negative advice to the point that she becomes racist because of the way she was raised at home. Not everyone experiences discrimination or racism, but if we want to prevent this form of discrimination from happening more and more, we must educate our young people. Discrimination in schools is common and not just among children, but it can also occur among teachers and students. Teachers treat students differently because they don't look like them or maybe because they think minorities don't put in effort in class, why bother giving them more attention. Therefore, they focus more on their own race.
