Essay / Gender Wage Gap - 661
The Gender Wage GapAccording to Lilly Ledbetter, “We demanded justice because equal pay for equal work is an American value. » This is how we must consider the question of the wage gap between the two sexes, which could be defined as the difference in income between men and women. JR Shackleton, "Explaining the Global Pay Gap", the gender pay gap is justified for two reasons: women take more time off work than men, and men generally work in unattractive working conditions. These two compelling reasons can justify the wage gap and show why women seem to be mistreated. The first reason Shackleton believes the gender pay gap is justified is that women request more days off than men. Certainly, this affects their work performance. As Shackleton noted, “Women on average miss more work than men due to illness.” (Shackleton by 18). Due to this law, employers prefer to hire men rather than women. This statement confirms Shackleton's logical view on the justification of the gender wage gap. Shackleton raised an important point regarding the gender pay gap. Statistics on women's commitment to work have alerted employers and influenced their decisions about hiring women. This gave more opportunities for men to fill these vacancies. It is worth mentioning that Shackleton states: “This has led risk-averse employers to operate with stereotypes, which may be accurate or inaccurate, about the common characteristics of the group” (par 18). Shackleton's mind is right. Some employers are misled by statistics and have a stereotypical view of women. Women must make more efforts to change this reality. The second reason to justify equal pay between the sexes...... middle of paper ...... is wrongly prejudiced, and this cannot remain the state of society. Without women in the workplace, society goes backwards. There is a warning in the words of Gertrude Stein: “A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.” » More precisely, if a woman does not want to work with a man, humanity ends. Ultimately, as Shackleton justified the gender gap, American values justify that equal pay should be for equal work regardless of gender. Obviously, women are not expected to earn the same salary as men as long as their efforts are shared between work and family. Shackleton demonstrated that work must be freed from traditional gender considerations, and he gave good examples on the subject. If women want the gender pay gap to be zero, they should work as much as men, or even more than men.
