God has given us the greatest commandment of all: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” However, the reality is that we cannot follow through. We tend to turn a blind eye and distance ourselves from people less fortunate than us. God gave us this law to follow, so we should be able to do it, but the saddest thing is that we are not keeping His commandment. Our lack of knowledge or ignorance can be the cause of our self-centeredness. The majority of people in today's society despise and distance themselves from the poor. According to some, they are useless people who need to be taken care of. “They don’t contribute anything to society because they are unemployed and poor. Don't associate with poor people because they do bad things, for example, they commit crimes and use drugs. Blaming the poor for creating their situation is a good excuse for not helping them. Especially in America, where there is no reason to be poor, because it is the land of opportunity. Some people think that the poor have more opportunities than the middle class. For example, there are food stamps, public housing, and the government pays for health care, all available to them. This commandment tells us to abandon our selfish ways. Sometimes we consider that this commandment is not a reality for our world today. Sometimes we can't show love to our enemies. Life can be too busy to take time to feed the poor, and the poor need to take care of themselves. We're only human and we can't do everything. Whether they like you or respond to your love, Jesus' command still stands: you must show love to your neighbor in practical ways. God told his people that the use of our earthly resources (our wealth) should manifest our experience of divine mercy by graciously relieving the poverty of others.
