  • Essay / Interpretation of Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet”

Interpretation of Romeo and Juliet What would drive young lovers to mysteriously commit suicide so that they could be together? Is it their parents who forbid them from seeing each other, or is it themselves? William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two young "star-crossed lovers" whose deaths were caused by fate, not by their parents or themselves. First of all, Romeo and Juliet came from feuding families: Montague's Romeo and Capulet's Juliet. Romeo was so depressed by his unrequited love for Rosaline when this happened that he went to a masquerade party. There he falls in love with Juliet, Lord Capulet's daughter, and forgets Rosaline. When they are finally torn apart, that's when Romeo and Juliet realize they belong to feuding families. Their love, of course, causes their immediate marriage to fail, and Brother Lawrence agrees in hopes of bringing closure to the feuding families. Unfortunately, Tybalt and Mercutio are killed and Romeogets banished, leaving Juliet without a husband or cousin. "Oh, I am a fool of fortune", (Act III, scene I) explains how Romeo feels at the time of Tybalt's death. He felt that he had fallen into one of the many cruel games of fate and that it was too late to escape. As things get worse, Lord Capulet arranges for Juliet to marry Paris, causing Juliet to panic. She then has to hurry up and do something to stop the marriage and of course, fate would bring her back to Brother Lawrence. Destiny wouldn't stop there. He just continued. He ensured that Brother Jean, the messenger who was supposed to announce Juliette's false death, was quarantined. Romeo discovers that Juliet is dead from Balthazar and cries: “Is that really the case? – Then I challenge you. , stars!" (Act 5, scene 1, p. 213). He blames Juliet's death on fate and returns to Verona with poison to join her. He leaves shortly before Brother Jean speaks to Brother Lawrence about his failure to convey the message. But fate did not stop there. He then made Brother Lawrence leave his cell and rush to the Capulet vault. Unfortunately, Brother Lawrence arrived a little too late and Romeo arrived before him..
