The man is conflicted and goes back and forth between "the photo of his wife and the original photo of Beth blindfolded" (Gaitskill 188), he can't decide what more he wants but soon begins to think he might have the best of both worlds. The man is very dominant and really only has one goal for Beth: to maintain a masochistic relationship with her. However, Beth wants more, she is okay with this relationship as long as she gets the love she wants from it. Beth was afraid of this man at first and again I see the woman doing what the man wants to try to get what she wants. Beth, at the beginning of the relationship with this man, says: "I'm afraid of you."
