  • Essay / The Effects of Cramming for an Exam - 804

Worrying about an approaching deadline or an upcoming exam is nothing new to most people, especially students . The way professionals and students deal with stress is quite similar. The majority of people who often find themselves in this situation report staying up most of the night, or even all night, preparing and reviewing information. As the standards of quality education continue to rise rapidly, students have less and less time to prepare for approaching exam dates. The pressure to succeed and do well pushes many high school and college students to intensively study all the information, or cram it, the day before the exam, while delaying sleep. Although it seems harmless, there are many serious effects of late-night study sessions. Staying up late and checking information does more harm than good. First, there is no correlation between studying late at night and getting better test scores. In fact, research shows the exact opposite. Studies have shown that “information is not absorbed because memories are formed during deep sleep” (“Cramming Hurts Grades and Health,” 2012). At the time of the test, the information will no longer be memorized. It would be like not studying at all. Making late night caffeine-filled study sessions unnecessary and ineffective. Foregoing sleep for grades may seem like a good idea; However, cramming for a test the night before actually impairs mental functions. “Seung-Schik Yoo, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, reached this conclusion after conducting a study that required subjects to abstain from sleep for 36 hours and evaluate various visual stimuli” (Heibutzki). Yoo's study showed that lack of sleep can weaken mental functions. Those who... middle of paper ...... suffer the consequences of prolonged sleep and are oblivious to what they are actually doing to their body and physical being. Although staying up late may seem harmless, late night study sessions have many serious effects. Staying up late and checking information does more harm than good.
