Essay / The Solo River - 771
The Bengawan Solo is the longest river in the Indonesian archipelago, located on the island of Java. It passes through the slopes of Mount Lawu, through Solo Province and through the lowlands before emptying into the Java Sea. Java is well known for having a tropical monsoon climate; flooding is therefore a common environmental problem throughout Indonesia. Java has a long wet forecast from October to April, with the wettest months being January and February. Due to the recent eruptions of Mounts Merapi, Kelut and Lawu, there has been a distinct distribution of ash and volcanic remains carried by the waters of the Solo River. Volcanic ash contributes to the high agricultural fertility of farmlands near the river. Although it can be beneficial to the fertility of Solo's farmlands, the ash carries disease to those near the river. Furthermore, the floods affected people and their homes, making them uninhabitable due to access to water that entered their homes. The construction of Wonogiri Dam was part of a major flood resistance project and a source of hydroelectric power for Solo, but annual floods continue to haunt Solo residents. Annual floods have caused serious ecological, social and economic losses and damage. Local geologists predict that severe climate change would lead to better weather forecasts during rainy seasons, leading to greater overflowing of rivers, major floods, landslides, deaths and losses. Due to recent floods, which left more than 100 people dead, much of Solo's agriculture is affected; buildings and means of transportation were destroyed, causing significant economic losses. Due to Solo's history with...... middle of paper ...... house as well. Corruption is widespread in Indonesia. The organization may request an amount of money from the government to solve the flooding problem, although IFPP leaders could potentially choose to pocket the money for their own use, instead of properly solving the flooding problem in Solo. Due to corruption, the remaining money could not be enough for construction, so they have to minimize the use of resources, which could lead to a weaker dam, or they have to build a smaller dam which could not reduce flood levels as well. Although problems such as corruption exist, the dam system would be an effective method as flood levels would be controlled and hydrological energy could be provided to the population, thereby slowly covering its costs, giving rise to a very effective method. for the residents of Solo.
