Essay / The Collectivist Society Depicted in Ayn Rand's Hymn terrible consequences of collectivism. It depicts an oppressive culture in which the word “I” is unknown and men belong to the collective “we”. The men's lives are determined by the Vocation Council, a group that maintains a powerful dictatorship by subjugating the public from the very beginning of their lives. The idea that "if your fellow human beings do not need you, there is no reason for you to burden the earth with your body" (Chapter 1) has been forced into the average mindset of a vehemently maintained society. On the other hand, Rand mocks totalitarian civilization through the main character Equality. Since birth, Equality possessed a sharp mind and constantly distanced himself from his peers. Throughout his life, he displays behavior unwilling to conform not only to his name, but also to the rules of society. After being found guilty of independent thinking, he is sadistically beaten and dragged to the Palace of Corrective Detention, an unsupervised prison that castigates the public for his wrongdoing. Chains are useless due to society's brainwashing and obedience to orders, therefore allowing equality to slip away. In a collective society, citizens are denied their inalienable right to individualism, which ultimately eliminates any thoughts of opposition. Through their submission, the presence of their soul disappears and society considers the collectivist principle to be true. The absence of guards and the old locks of the Corrective Detention Palace symbolize the evils that result from a collectivist society. For men to espouse collectivist ideals, it...... middle of paper ......nthem , it presents a collectivist society in which man's inalienable right to individualism has been revoked, this which pushes citizens to surrender their souls to the strong dictatorship. They conform to part of the programmed group called “We” and compromise their desires by accepting the collectivist principle as true. They do not possess free thought and are prohibited from having free will. Little by little, they are transformed and no longer need palpable constraints because their minds are hampered by the deprivations from which they suffer. However, she uses the main character, Equality, to break the bonds of society and carve out her own individual path. The story of equality is about human existence in which men must lead their own lives or suffer the horrible consequences of interdependence and living for the good of society.
