  • Essay / Guns on Campus: Ban for Less Violence, or Legalize...

Due to the current chaos of sudden violence on campus, many pro-gun activists have agreed that not only professors, but Also students should be allowed to carry guns on campus. The Bill of Rights states that the American people have the right to bear arms. This should be sacred to the American people instead of being violated or suppressed. But what is the price to pay for those who have committed violent crimes or had suicidal intentions? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2010, 6,300 out of every 100,000 people were injured due to self-inflicted firearm injuries. This leaves approximately 93,700 people who have not used weapons to self-harm (5). The articles also indicate that 16,000 people out of 100,000 were used for homicide in 2012 (83). Students should be able to feel safe and protected, but only after taking a large number of tests. Students and staff should have the same sense of security as any other perpetrator who causes a school shooting. Imagine how safe school shooters feel when they are the one and only person in the entire building with a gun. The school shooter's mental state is clearly not stable. Which brings the argument to this: When concealed carry is allowed, why not go through a number of basic tests, mental tests, and a lengthy process in order to obtain a concealed carry license? Some of these things are already done to people who take the concealed carry test, but if a student wants to carry a gun on campus, they have to work for it. Concealed carry shouldn't be easy to obtain, but it should at least be offered. A number of gun advocates have based many of their opinions on pure fear.
