"With the way they pay you, you can't do it alone without having a second job or someone to help you, unless you've been there 20 years or you be a manager” (607). That's what one Wal-Mart employee says, and it's the sad reality for many other low-wage workers. A low salary is not enough to raise and support a family, or even to support a single person. Many low-wage workers have to work a second job just to make a living. Low-wage workers don't get paid enough for what they do, they benefit the American economy and business owners, but they don't even make enough money to support their families. Most low-wage workers rely on the government's welfare system. Companies make huge profits from low-wage workers, while workers struggle to earn a decent living. After all the hard work low-wage workers do, companies don't sacrifice any of their profits to make their low-wage employees self-sufficient. Most low-wage workers use the government's welfare system as well as the government's health insurance program. These programs are funded by taxpayers. Money collected by taxpayers is not being spent on what it should be spent on. Instead of funding education or paying off the national debt with tax money. Tax dollars are directed to Social Security and insurance-related programs. Society is correcting the mistakes of big, greedy corporations. According to the Center on Budget and Policy website, 24% of tax money is spent on Social Security and 22% of tax money is spent on Medicare, Medicaid and CHIP. Most of this 46% is dedicated to correcting the mistakes of big companies. Why are low wage workers paid so little for what they do, are there jobs that are easy to do and useless in soc...... middle of paper..... . ..anyone, they get so little raise no matter how hard they work. Many low-wage workers cannot support their families, they must work overtime, even seven days a week. Many low-wage workers work two or three jobs just to earn a living and support their families. Big companies don't consider helping their hard-working employees by giving them a raise because many low-wage workers are afraid to speak up and are afraid of losing their jobs. I think the best solution to this problem is to pass a law that requires all employers to increase their salaries every year based on the profits they make. This solution will force all employers to reward their hardworking employees. I believe this method will reduce the amount of taxes spent to correct the mistakes of big business and will significantly improve the quality of life of low-wage workers..
