Essay / The Usefulness of the Atomic Bomb in World War II Japan had to stop. Even though the United States had significantly reduced its numbers, it needed a strong military victory to bring Japan to surrender. Without the use of the atomic bomb, the war between Japan and America might have lasted for a few more years, but with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the war ended quickly and with fewer casualties than if the war had continued. For these reasons, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a military necessity and a scientific experiment. Japan had provoked America into a war with naval attacks such as the Panay Incident and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Document A shows the mischievous Japanese shooting at peaceful Americans and provoking them to become angry. The editorial cartoon, drawn by Dr. Seuss, was published two days after Pearl Harbor, showing that Pearl Harbor was just another tactic to "end the nap" and provoke America into war. The use of the atomic bomb was a necessity so that the mischievous Japanese would stop disturbing the peaceful Americans. The cartoon also depicts the Japanese trying to bring down the Americans; the Japanese would like to challenge America because they occupied territories close to the Japanese empire. Japan felt threatened by America and was trying to show America who was the superior country, which is why the atomic bomb was necessary to get Japan to surrender. The atomic bomb inevitably ended the war with Japan; Without the atomic bomb, the war could have lasted much longer and caused even more casualties. In 1945, America and Britain needed a quick victory because they were at war with several nations in Europe... middle of paper ... and they were ending the war with Japan. But not only did they create bombs, they also found a new way to power America's growing cities. Additionally, even if many knew the power of a nuclear bomb, they could not have predicted its lasting effects on the earth and people. So, during this scientific experiment, we learned that nuclear radiation can cause genetic mutations, the formation of cataracts, leukemia and shortened lifespan (Document I). At the end of World War II, it was imperative that America achieve a quick and focused victory. . The victory they needed would not have been possible without the atomic bomb. The use of the atomic bomb prevented many casualties and ended a grueling war. Since then, we have learned many useful facts about nuclear power and bombs. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a military necessity and a scientific experiment.
