    Many Bahamians agree that Bahamians born to non-Bahamian citizens should not be granted citizenship. Others have argued that the Bahamas is too small to accommodate foreigners. Yes, the Bahamas is small, but these people need to understand that these children were born here and they are part of the Bahamas. According to Richard Fawkes' article in the Freeport News, Christian Council, Rev. Carlton Dorsette states that "children do not determine who their parents will be." Children do not determine where they will be born. Therefore, I think it is wrong to discriminate against children based on who their parents are…”. Why are the Bahamas too small to accommodate children born to foreigners? What other houses do they know? When Bahamians gave birth to their children in the United States, did Uncle Sam deny their children their birthrights? Bahamians need to understand that children born to Haitian, Jamaican and other parents are not going anywhere. Children were not asked to be born. Many children born to foreign parents have made great contributions to the Bahamas. For example, great contributions in government agencies such as government houses, hospitals and many more. According to Donald McCartney, Stephen Dillet is a Haitian national who was the first person of color in history to win an election as representative of Nassau. Isn’t that a great contribution made by a foreign national to the Bahamas? Additionally, Mr. Dillet was a spokesperson for the rights of free blacks in the Bahamas (p. 26). The common view is that foreigners like Haitians and Jamaicans have done nothing for the Bahamas. Plus, they take over. Is it fair to stereotype these two nationals because of their poor country?
