To what extent do you consider Macbeth a tragic hero? I plan to explore Shakespeare's Macbeth to try to determine if Macbeth meets the criteria of a tragic hero. The first example we encounter in the play of Macbeth as a tragic hero is that he is of high birth, in act one, scene three. after Macbeth wins the battle, King Duncan comes to visit him in his castle, while there, Duncan recognizes that Macbeth's position is necessary with the king, this relationship with the king fulfills the first criterion of being a hero tragic, high birth. The next example we see of a tragic hero of good qualities, Macbeth has these good qualities as we see him in the form of a good strong soldier in war, this is proven with the first act scene where Macbeth has just won a great battle by helping the Scots. army and so is praised; “For brave Macbeth – well, he deserves that name,” this quote shows that the people around him think he is a great man, which helps Macbeth fulfill the criteria of a tragic hero by having good qualities.
