  • Essay / China and Taiwan - 808

China and TaiwanHistorically, the Taiwan issue arose after the Chinese nationalists and communists restarted the civil war. They had previously settled their differences temporarily, to defend the Japanese invasion in the 1930s. Civil war resumed in 1946, just a year after fighting ended at the end of World War II. The communists were led by Mao Tse Tung and the nationalists were led by Chiang Kia-Shek. However, the nationalists enjoyed American support. The United States was already concerned about the rise of communism around the world and was determined not to let China fall into communism as well. The United States viewed China as a major global superpower that had the potential to influence other, smaller countries to join communism. Communism grew so quickly because many people in the major countries that would soon become communist were very poor. By joining communism, they could get a share of the wealth of the rich. There were also a few rich people who would lose some of their own wealth, but since there were many more poor people than rich people, this did not slow the rapid growth of communism. Taiwan's problem was that the communist "People's Republic of China" (PRC) wanted Taiwan to be considered part of China. The nationalist “Republic of China” (ROC) wanted to be recognized as an independent country. The PRC would not allow the creation of two separate countries. If Taiwan were recognized as an independent country, the communists would attack it, forcing America to intervene. America wanted a "one China" policy, but was prepared to defend Taiwan if mainland China launched an attack. During World War II, America was Russia's ally. Together they defeated Germany, but Russia was in the middle of paper......in the second part of the timeline - Include sources. Taiwan, China and America have never used nuclear weapons against each other, but each has very sophisticated missiles and is ready to use them if necessary. Any conflict between them seems to be dormant, but all it takes is one trigger to start a war. The main reason why Taiwan, China and America have not started fighting recently and are unlikely to do so in the future is their trade ties. it would be destroyed if they did. China and the United States rely on each other to support their economies. This is why I think the Taiwan problem is not completely resolved. Resumption of fighting would destroy all existing trade routes, but Taiwan, China and America retain a mutual distrust of each other. Taiwan is still not recognized as an independent country.
