Essay / Prison foster care and the systematic punishment of...
This article delves deeper into the issue of incarcerated Black women by going further and examining another dynamic of this issue, namely incarcerated Black mothers in particular. I appreciate this article because it recognizes that this corrupt and unjust system is also the result of heteropatriarchy, which insists that women are dependent on men and punishes those who defy this norm. It is important to also recognize that traditional notions of family are invoked in these ideals and punishments, constructed by Eurocentric patriarchy. While I will only briefly touch on how foster care systems relate to this issue, as it is nonetheless an important dynamic to identify, I will focus primarily on the mothers themselves and how of which they are affected by the continued incarceration of black people.
