  • Essay / The Mystery Behind Black Holes - 1149

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the heavens proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1, the beauty of the night sky is nothing compared to the mysteries of space, the secrets it holds and the amazing creations that inhabit it. There are many mysteries to uncover. One of these secrets is black holes, invisible massless, unfathomable stars, these giants of the universe, which mercilessly drag everything within their reach, black holes are truly one of the supreme mysteries of our time. But what are they really? A black hole is a region of space where gravity prevents anything, including light, from escaping. The theory of general relativity predicts that a compact mass will typically warp space to form a black hole. Around a black hole there is a defined surface called the event horizon which marks the point of no return. The hole is called "black" because it absorbs all the light that reaches the horizon and reflects nothing. Stellar-mass black holes are thought to form when very massive stars collapse at the end of their life cycles. Once formed, a black hole can continue to grow by absorbing mass from its surroundings. By absorbing other stars and merging with other black holes, huge black holes of several million solar masses can form. Most studies of black holes agree on the existence of supermassive black holes at the centers of most galaxies. How are black holes formed? By gravitational collapse, gravitational collapse occurs when the internal pressure of an object is not sufficient to resist the object's own gravity. For stars, this usually happens either because it has too little "fuel" left to maintain its temperature, or because a star that would have been stable is given extra matter in a way that can... ... middle of paper... ...only black holes are most likely found in distant galaxies; we are far from any danger. The subject of time dilation regarding black holes is something so mystical that it is difficult for our minds to comprehend, but it is a fact that makes these unfathomable masses so incredible, black holes are truly a magnificent creation of God and their wonder should lead us to Declare with great fervor the glory of God as we gaze upon the heavens.1.
