Essay / Uniforms in public schools? - 535
One of the questions facing our society is whether or not we should have “public school uniforms.” The word uniform means “a single form” that makes everyone equal. Some people say yes, others say no for different reasons. I sincerely believe that every person has the right to be equal. People shouldn't be judged by what they wear. One of the reasons why schools should have uniforms is so that families could save money. The average cost of a JC penny uniform for a student per year is approximately three hundred dollars. A normal family spends between five hundred and a thousand dollars on a student's clothing. If public schools had uniforms, students wouldn't feel any different, which would help them feel better and concentrate in their classes. If families could save money on clothing, they could spend it on other students' school expenses. School uniforms could also last more than a year. Even if you lose your school uniform, you can pass it on to a younger sibling or cousin. Uniforms help avoid buying so many clothes per year. Officials say students feel happier when they don't have to worry about their clothes. This would help students concentrate better in class. Virginia Draa, an assistant professor at Youngstown State University, conducted a survey of uniformed and non-uniformed students. Her results were fascinating, she said, even if they weren't a big academic improvement. But she said there are better attendance, graduation and proficiency rates. Uniforms are proven to not only help with graduation and other rates, but also help to gain discipline. Having uniforms at school would help students take school more seriously. Students would feel equal in class because there would be no differences in clothing. While doing some research, I found that University of Missouri assistant professor David Brunsma said he conducted an investigation. This survey showed that wearing uniforms made academic performance worse in schools. David tested the school with uniforms for six months and the results showed that students performed better without uniforms. However, this survey was only conducted in one school. Thirty-nine other Ohio schools claim better attendance and graduation rates. Uniforms are already in around 20 different states and most of them have good opinions.
