Has anyone ever wondered how radio communications changed society in the 1930s? According to research by the Education Foundation, many people believe that the most important development in radio at this time was entertainment; this is entirely false. In fact, radio communications not only impacted the way people received their information, but it also helped bring together a nation that emerged from a brutal depression. Together, the nations made radio communications the dominant form of media in the 1930s. As stations and businesses began to become established, businesses across the country took notice of the advertising department. This new kingdom ignited a spark for the new national economy which then exploded and gave birth to an economically and socially powerful country. One of the ways that radio communications changed American society was the way people obtained information. In 1933, 16 million people became unemployed and had to stay at home. Many could not provide for their families, but that did not stop them from buying a radio. Sales exploded in the United States and expanded to other parts of the world such as Australia, Cuba and Russia. About one in three households in the United States owns a radio – the easiest and most entertaining way to listen to news and advertising. Newspaper publishing declined and some businesses became obsolete due to the growth of radio stations. Clear hostility was evident between newspaper publishers and broadcasters. The owner of one of the largest newspaper empires, William Randolph Hearst, was forced to sell stock and contribute some of his own wealth to save his company.
