"To His Shy Mistress"" To His Shy Mistress by Andrew Marvell is a seizure of the second genre of poem in which an anonymous young man attempts to woo the hand of his mistress. This kind of poem gives the reader the idea that time is not only precious, but also rare. The speaker uses many gentle tactics to persuade the girl, starting with compliments and ending with a more forceful, morbid approach. “To His Coy Mistress” is not only witty but also colorful, full of puns and perceived differently by men and women. Andrew Marvell was born on March 31, 1621 in Yorkshire, England. Because he was the son of an Anglican priest, Marvell grew up in an extremely pious home. He received his primary education at Hull Grammar School. At just twelve years old, he attended Trinity College, Cambridge University. Marvell traveled to Europe, where he was assigned the role of guardian of Sir Thomas Fairfax's daughter. Marvell wrote mainly poems with lyrics. This helped build the careers of other poets with similar writing ideas. In 1659, he decided to move away from poetry and concentrate on his political career. From there he served the Hull constituency in Parliament until his death in 1678. During Marvell's lifetime, many historic events occurred. King Charles was overthrown and beheaded before Marvell was four years old. In 1660, Charles II was made king and during his reign, Oliver Cromwell was dug up and beheaded. The severed man had been placed on a pole and mounted above the Western Minister's room as a warning to any coming rebels ("Andrew Marvell" 281).
