Michael was not only blessed with impressive dancing skills, but behind those flashy dance moves was hard work and dedication. From the age of 5, Michael Jackson studied and was inspired by the great icon James Brown. Jackson studied the musician's singing, dancing, and even the legendary mannerisms while he performed on stage. As Michael studied the late singer, he had a hunch that he wanted to become a big celebrity in the same way that James Brown did. In Malcolm Gladwell's book, The Outliers, he discusses the 10,000 hour rule. He indicated that it takes approximately ten thousand hours of practice to achieve complete mastery in a field. It's easy to assume that Michael simply had a natural ability to sing and dance, but we tend to overlook the endless number of hours this man put in to achieve such success. The most compelling evidence that contributed to his success was his ability to have room for error and think of new ideas. Michael was constantly researching and building new dance moves/routines to present to his audience. Moreover, he always wants to
