Essay / Examples of Imperialism in the Collapse of Things - 1133
Even the language of the title given to the commissioner reveals how misled he is. He sees himself as someone who knows a lot about appeasing and cooperating the locals, which is ironic because he is the main cause of their suffering instead of their peace. Furthermore, the impression of "pacification" or appeasement is naturally offensive because it gives a condescending and erroneous idea that the natives are mere helpless infants. Likewise, the label “primitive” appears as a demeaning insult that reproduces the commissioner's obliviousness towards the Igbo and their highly formalized and complexly ritualized way of life. Simply stating that the curator came up with a title for his book "after careful consideration" underlines the fact that the level of attention he has given to his own thoughts and ideas far exceeds that given to the field of study itself. This is due to his imperialist views towards African tribes and clans. The story, as you can see, contains many profound quotes about imperialism and Chinua Achebe's anti-imperialist stance in this regard.
