  • Essay / America is NOT a Christian Nation - 1450

On a daily basis, we lie, harass, push around, persecute, degrade, judge, kill, starve, and not only envy our fellow Americans, but we do these things to the man sitting right next to us, but “In God We Trust,” right? Fake! How can we claim to be a Christian nation when we have gone through hundreds of years of religious rights violations, when we have people who are in need but no one as a whole cares enough about them, and when African-American species are threatened. Pilgrims leaving Europe and coming to America were motivated by religious freedom! Many different religions in our "God-fearing" nation have been excluded or rejected simply because of their right to believe in a higher being. In saying this, one must be careful to assume that religious freedom was NOT the only reason, because ever since the dust settled, from Europe to the "West Indies", our ancestors began telling the various sects nuns what they could and could not do to worship their own omnipresent deity. Even though the Pilgrims arrived full of the hatred that religious oppressions had brought them, one of their goals was to convert the Native Americans to Christianity! As our colonies became a unified nation, we began to pass laws that differentiated religions from their normal worship rituals. Henry Louis Mencken said, “Giving every man the right to vote has no more made men wise and free than Christianity has made them good.” » (Leray, 2014) Thomas Jeffereson declared: “I will never bow, by any word or deed, to the sanctuary of intolerance nor admit a right of inquiry into the religious opinions of others . " (Petrie, 2014) These two quotes emphasize that even though we the people, "one nation under God", are completely separate... middle of paper... ourselves and we would care even less if the next man lives or dies! We claim to be religious or Christian based on founding promises, but continually restrict those promises because of race, gender, sexual preference, and religion! This is, simply and surely, the reason why America is not a Christian nation. Works Cited Lieberman, Joseph I. “Religious Democracy” BYU Magazine.
