  • Essay / The Benefits of Sports and High School Sports

Many kids play sports in hopes of one day becoming a star. Although this is considered cute at a young age, it is not realistic for all high school students. There are such a small percentage of kids who actually play college and professional sports that it's just not practical for a kid to put all of their hopes and dreams there, especially if they're not so fabulous. According to the NCAA, of the approximately 8 million high school athletes in the United States, only 460,000 will play college sports (“Probability”). Parents need to be honest with their child about their potential and help them realize that they could achieve something else. Not everyone is cut out to be a star athlete, but a great entrepreneur can be. The biggest mistake most kids make is setting athletic goals so ambitious that they forget about their homework. Then, when they don't become the next Michael Jordan, they have absolutely nothing to fall back on.
