Language and Learning Problem—IntroductionAuditory processing is the process of picking up sound through the ear and having it travel to the linguistic part of the brain to be interpreted. In simpler terms, “What the brain does with what the ear hears” (Katz and Wilde, 1994). Auditory processing problems can affect a student's ability to develop language skills and communicate effectively. “If speech sounds are not transmitted to the language system accurately and quickly, then language ability will surely be compromised” (Miller, 2011). Many skills are involved in auditory processing and are necessary for basic listening and communication processes. These include sensation, discrimination, localization, auditory attention, auditory figure, auditory discrimination, auditory closure, auditory synthesis, auditory analysis, auditory association, and auditory memory. (Florida Department of Education, 2001) A person can experience a variety of problems if auditory processing is damaged. An auditory decoding deficit occurs when the dominant language hemisphere does not function properly, affecting the coding of speech sounds. (ACENTA, 2003) Some indicators of a person struggling with an auditory decoding deficit would be weakness in semantics, difficulties with reading and spelling, and frequent misunderstanding of information. Another problem associated with auditory processing is binaural integration/separation deficit. This occurs in the corpus callosum and results from poor communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. (ACENTA, 2003) A person with this disorder will have difficulty performing tasks that require intersensory and/or multisensory communication. They may have difficulty with reading, spelling, writing...... middle of paper......ilkins, 490-502.Keith R. (2000). Diagnosing central auditory processing disorders in children.
