Essay / Discuss the Concept of Race - 967
Before we study the concept of race, we must first ask ourselves: what is race and how can we describe it? The word “race” is used almost daily in our dialogues and conversations. As people, we are defined by our personal characteristics and our own upbringing and furthermore have a specific meaning around a social trait. Unfortunately, in Australia, racism still plays a significant role in today's contemporary society. One example in particular that will be explored in more detail later is racism against Indigenous Australians. This is perhaps not surprising as Australia can be considered a multicultural country, where many people from different backgrounds are brought together. This is therefore an easier opportunity to identify one's "difference" and create a social trait or stereotype based on one's difference. Race can be divided into three categories: racism, determinism and racialization. Race is evident in our daily lives, we see people judging others based on their characteristics and making stereotypical statements about themselves, which often quickly causes conflict between the community and society. The race therefore takes place everywhere, in institutions such as schools and hospitals, to places such as public transport. Therefore, studying the concept of race is important because it gives us insight into the world we find ourselves in today, into our contemporary society. According to James Arvanitakis, racism is "described as a person's characteristics, but it also has a specific meaning around a social trait." As previously mentioned, racism unfortunately remains a major problem in Australian society today. Although Australia can be considered a multicultural country, Australia is divided due to differences in society, as a country we have allowed racism, determinism and racialization to be where they were . is in today's culture. There are, however, some campaigns that try to reduce racist actions such as "all together now" and "it all stops with me". Campaigns like this will allow individuals from different backgrounds to express their ideas about racism and offer suggestions on how to end racism. Although there are campaigns to prevent racism, it is still present in our daily lives, as Australia is known for its multiculturalism. Racialization, like determinism and racism, constitutes a vast crisis in today's society because it significantly affects an individual's way of life. Overall, it is important to study the concept of race because racism, determinism and racialization are present everywhere and every day in our contemporary society..
