Essay / Family Development Theory - 2534
(Jeter, 2016) This theory places particular emphasis on how time affects the changes we observe in families. Family development centers on the presence of children and changes in family stages are determined by the oldest child. Some important aspects of this theory are roles and norms. Families with launch centers or parents who have just sent their first child to college experience many changes during this time. Parents' standards change as the child they raised and cared for now becomes their own independent adult. As mentioned above, parents are changing their disciplinary standards to adapt to the new dangers their child faces when going to college. Student standards also change. They will likely experience a lot more freedom than when they were in elementary school and living with their parents. Curfews could be lifted, they could have more financial freedom and the freedom to make their own decisions without having to obtain permission. This new freedom can be intimidating for some, and others certainly take advantage of it and may find themselves in dangerous situations.
