Mark W. Durm stated that “it was not until 1792 that Cambridge University implemented GPA and started the grading system legitimate” (2). In the 18th century, teachers were paid according to the size of their classes. Over time, the grading policy adapted to reduce teachers' workload, allowing them to have larger classes. Because of this structure, student success has become less important than the grading system. The system used before the GPA was more beneficial than the newly implemented system. For example, more students interacted with each other, allowing them to learn important communication skills. The level of friendly competition and student understanding in the classroom was sufficient for the teacher to understand that the students understood the material (gpa-calculator.us). The GPA grading system changed learning because it made it easier for teachers to assign points and a grade, rather than ensuring that students understood concepts. This is why today's students are only obsessed with getting an "A", rather than appreciating how to acquire knowledge for the sake of their individual growth and understanding. In the 20th century, most schools in the United States conformed to the GPA grading system and introduced a completely new grading structure.
