  • Essay / What does color symbolize in The Great Gatsby

Klipspringer plays the piano. Outside, “the rain was still falling, but the darkness had parted in the west and there was a pink and golden wave of frothy clouds above the sea” (Fitzgerald 101). It is a foreshadowing of what is to come. Even if the storm was over and pink represented the end of the storm, it would also represent the end of Gatsby's dreams of being successful and having Daisy. The next time pink appears, Gatsby will wear it, “his magnificent pink chiffon suit” (Fitzgerald 165). In this costume, he goes to Daisy's house and has lunch with the Buchannans, Nick and Jordan. It's the hottest day of the year and they decide to go to town. On the way home, Daisy hits Myrtle and kills her in Gatsby's car. A few days later, Gatsby is murdered by Myrtle's husband because he believed he was his wife's secret lover.
