Essay / Review of Victoria Marks' 'Mothers and Daughters' » and “Mothers And Daughters”. These two pieces made in Spring 2014 focus on the idea of celebrating the life you've been given, leaving your mark on the world, and making the most of every opportunity you have to be with someone who is close to your heart. Victoria Marks is a professor of dance at UCLA who also choreographs dances for stage and film. “Marks' recent work has examined the politics of citizenship, as well as the representation of virtuosity and disability. These themes are part of his ongoing commitment to situating dance creation in the sphere of political meaning. Marks in both films "Men" and "Mothers And Daughters" believes that "Your ability to dance doesn't matter because we all have different abilities", which is why she used trained actors and not trained to create these two works of art. “Men” was a very fascinating dance piece, about a group of older men who travel from all over to come together to reminisce about the long lives they have lived. In doing so, they all return to a childhood state of mind and experience growing up again. Throughout the film, each man leaves behind a record of his past, such as the images at the beginning, the footprints in the snow and the white rocks placed on the ground to trace where the dancer has been in the past . These tokens represent a mark that man has left on the world, in one way or another. At first, the dancers' bodies move slowly and their faces express a feeling of weakness and fatigue. But once spring arrives in the middle of paper, each shows a unique perspective of celebrating life, leaving a mark on the world, and spending time with those you love. The movie “Men” focuses on men who want to leave their mark on the world, and “Mothers and Daughters” is about how a mother leaves her mark on her child. Although Marks doesn't think you have to be an amazing dancer to appear in a dance video, Victoria Mark's is absolutely a Dance for the Camera virtuoso. His eye for detail is exquisite and his dance films are full of emotion and expressive movement. Her way of using dance to tell a story is phenomenal, and you can tell she truly wants to make a difference in the world with her work. She wants to express her feelings through dance and change the way people perceive life and time. These movies make me wonder what have I been missing in my life and how can I change my life..
