  • Essay / The impact of the non-legalization of same-sex marriage - 705

“Being an American means having the right to be who you are. Sometimes it doesn’t happen,” Herb Ritts said of same-sex marriage. While most people are concerned about the legalization of same-sex marriage, the consequences of not legalizing it are already being felt. By not legalizing same-sex marriage, American society is harmed because the foundation of society is broken: marriage. Currently, couples are facing the consequences of not being able to get married; therefore, it is important to examine the effect non-legalization, “…and in some cases illegalization…” (Marisa Bunney) has on society. America is known as a “melting pot” or “salad bowl.” » because of the various cultures that were combined to form the society. Throughout history, the requirements for becoming a U.S. citizen have continually evolved due to social issues. One of the biggest issues Americans face right now is where they stand on same-sex marriage and whether to accept homosexuality in general. By not legalizing same-sex marriage, we are showing the public that homosexuality is bad and heterosexuality is good; that it's okay to treat someone differently because they don't look like the majority. Marisa Bunney points out that "in addition to (arrogantly) dictating to American citizens what types of relationships are 'allowed' and deciding what is 'natural' and acceptable, this sends the message that cultural intolerance is, in done, tolerable and even acceptable. tolerated” (Marisa Bunney). Americans are proud of the Constitution and respect it because of what it benefits every individual. They believe in freedom of speech and believe that not being able to express themselves freely is absurd. When the Constitution declares something to be wrong or right, Americans stand by it with pride....... middle of paper ...... parents ied. Even when studies clearly show that a home with married parents is best for a child. Works CitedBunney, Marisa. "Subject: Research paper." Message to Victoria Lowe. May 9, 2014. Email. Cramer, David.
