Sociological Perspective on Pride and PrejudiceJoe Wright's film, Pride and Prejudice (2005), demonstrates the struggle of women to be treated as equals in the 19th century. From a feminist theoretical perspective, society was governed by patriarchy and women had few opportunities to support themselves. The film shows that the only way for a woman to be financially stable was to marry to obtain wealth and social status. The film's protagonist, Elizabeth Bennett, rebels against the idea of marrying for wealth or social position. However, she marries Mr. Darcy, who owns a large estate and is a prestigious person in society. The marriage between the two main characters is based solely on love. Yet the rest of the marriages that occur in the film are based on the compromise of convenience. Wright's film, Pride and Prejudice, illustrates social stratification and gender inequality to demonstrate the repression faced by women in the 19th century. Social constraints had a great influence on the role of women during this period. During this time, social class was an important factor in society, resulting in social stratification. The class to which an individual belonged dictated their social role in society and encouraged the group to choose their spouse. Elizabeth's family was considered middle class; therefore it was important that the women of the family married within their social class or the upper class. If a woman married a man from a lower class, her reputation and that of her family would be ruined. At the beginning of the film, Mr. Darcy shows how much he thinks Elizabeth is unworthy of him by refusing to dance with her. His middle class status and society...... middle of paper...... financial stability of the man before getting married. However, women today have more rights than before. Women now have the choice of marrying or living independently. Research has shown that more women than men pursue higher education. Women today have more opportunities to thrive and have more power over their future. Through Wright's film, Pride and Prejudice, audiences can learn about the gender inequality and social stratification that affected 19th century women. Mr. Darcy overcomes his problems of social class difference to fall in love with a woman who stands up to him and is equal to him in knowledge. Elizabeth finds love without compromising her beliefs about the true meaning of marriage. Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's love overcomes the gender inequalities and social stratification obstacles of their time..
