  • Essay / The relationship between political affiliation and...

When it comes to political affiliation, there is always the debate between conservatives and liberals. Currently, the United States is very divided between liberals and conservatives. Conservatives are described as being willing to preserve conditions, institutions, etc. existing, or to restore traditional conditions, and to limit change. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, the free market, individual liberty, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. Conservative policies generally emphasize individual responsibility for solving problems. Conservatives seek to end growing welfare programs, encourage individual responsibility, and return constitutionally mandated power to the states. Conservatism sees a nation made up of people who can solve their own problems with minimal help from government, as long as the people are free. Liberals, on the other hand, are described as being in favor of progress or reforms, such as in political or religious matters. Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. Liberals believe it is the duty of government to alleviate social ills and protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for government to solve problems. Although there is a clear divide among the United States in terms of political affiliation, conservatives outnumber liberals. Saad (2012) concludes that 40% of Americans describe their views as conservative, 21% as liberal, and 35% as moderate. The two groups clearly have different views, which may mean that there is a dispositional, genetic, or environmental difference that leads to one of the two attitudes...... middle of article.... ..
