  • Essay / Dreams Money Can't Buy - 1109

Every new day comes with a new obstacle and new circumstances that we must learn to face and approach. The variety of situations leads everyone to dictate the route they will decide to follow to reach their destination. Sometimes the routes people decide to take will lead them down a horrible path that can put their lives in danger and cause them to lose what they love most. In the novel The Great Gatsby, writer F. Scott Fitzgerald gives examples of how a dream can be corrupted by a focus on acquiring wealth and power. Fitzgerald uses a character, Nick Carraway, to illustrate the sequence of events that make Jay Gatsby's life miserable because of some of the poor choices he made to pursue his dream of winning back Daisy's love. Gatsby is a self-made man blinded by his motivation towards luxury goods, wealth and power thanks to the love he had for Daisy. Since the scene of the book takes place in the early 1920s, it was absolutely necessary for Gatsby to achieve his goal. Daisy came from a powerful and wealthy family, and in the 1920s it was normal for rich families to come together and poor families to stay together. The Great Gatsby gives examples of series of events that can be explained by Lauren Slater's chapter "In the Unlikely Event of Landing on Water: The Darley and Latane Training Manual - A Five-Step Approach ยป from his book Opening Skinner's Box and by Charles Duhigg's book The Power of Habit. All three readings have similarities in their explained actions that are questionable about how people can change due to the different types of environments they face and how their attitudes toward conflict will vary depending on the way they intend to act towards it. The Great Gatsby is a novel told through...... middle of paper ...... it's loved. Although this bad habit cannot be forgotten, it can be restructured by transforming the routine into something that does not harm one's relationship. The reason Tom cheats on his wife is because he really doesn't love her but, ironically, he is jealous when Daisy begins to suspiciously leave the house to go see Gatsby. Finally, Gatsby is a very endearing character because he has a lot of style and he is motivated by this dream of belonging to the upper class, he becomes a millionaire and has this remarkable lifestyle, but he cannot have Daisy and he dies trying to get her back. Gatsby's problem is that it is not enough for him to be rich now that he no longer cares about parties or lifestyle. He has to go back to that past and start a life with Daisy when they were both innocent, that was the time he needed to be a rich kid but he can't change the past..
