Quoting James MacGregor Burns, the difference between the manager and the leader is that the manager is rather “He who conducts business with economy – with efficiency” and the Leader: “He who will before guide or show the way” The importance of leader is to make the difference in the growth of the whole. The good conductor, unlike the conductor-manager, does not only aim to prepare a presentable concert program in the most efficient way possible. He/she will aim for the growth and development of the organization as a whole and its individuals. During my professional development, I mainly learned managerial skills, especially gaining knowledge on how to organize musical experiences. However, standing in front of the whole requires being a little more than that. Being a conductor is not only about defining tasks, it is also very much about the human factor.
