Essay / Too Much Media - 831
IntroductionIn our society today, the media is one of the most influential media present among American youth aged 8 to 18 years old. Kids spend about seven and a half hours a day consuming media in one way or another, not including texting and talking on the phone. Additionally, this does not include the time they spend multitasking between media sources. Tamar Lewin's article is directly related to the results provided by the research study with the aim of objectively making the results public. Children spend more time in media than in any other activity, proven by their ability to multitask and the idea that media has become part of their environment. Purpose of the News Article and Appropriateness of the Study The effects that media can have on children have a huge impact, which has created opportunities. for numerous studies aimed at determining the amount of media consumption by young Americans. The Kaiser Family Foundation's research study resulted in many jaw-dropping statistics, presented by Tamar Lewin in the article "If Your Kids Are Awake, They're Probably Online." The main objective of the article was to expose the considerable amount of time children spend connected to media and the possible problems associated with heavy media consumption. Additionally, the article is very meaningful and newsworthy because it was written to raise awareness about the amount of media children consume on a daily basis. According to Dr. Rich, a pediatrician specializing in media and child health, "with media use so pervasive, it was time to stop arguing about whether it was good or bad and accept it as doing part of children's environment, “like the air they breathe, the water they drink and the food they eat (Lewin, 2010). Again, Lewin's article is noteworthy because it contains important perspectives and people concerned about promoting the healthy development of children and adolescents. The research study formed the main basis for the composition of the article and the article used the results of the research study to publicly raise awareness about the media consumption in which children engage. From the results of the research study, it is evident that media has become one of the most influential media in the lives of American children. The research study and article flow together well, shedding light on children's media consumption in America. Works CitedLewin, T. (2010). If your kids are awake, they're probably online.
