Essay / Leininger's Transcultural Nursing Theory - 1583
Leininger's Transcultural Nursing Theory Edward B. Taylor (1903) defined culture as "that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, laws, customs and all other abilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. Clifford Geertz’s (1973) definition of culture was “the web of meaning according to which human beings interpret their experience and guide their action.” In 1990, Richard Fox went on to say that culture was "a set of understandings and an actively constructing consciousness by which individuals interpret the world around them...or a toolbox or set of scripts that individuals use to implement or stage.” their daily lives” (Vandenberg, 2010, p. 240). However defined, culture has the power to influence nursing. Medeleine Leininger was the first to produce a theory and model emphasizing the importance of cultural care, or health care that integrates the cultural practices and needs of the patient. The goal of Leininger's theory of diversity and universality of cultural care (1978) was to expose the existence of varied cultural needs and behaviors (Vandenberg, 2010, p. 241). Having personal aspirations for charitable and global nursing, I believe that the integration of cultural care and their body of knowledge into nursing is extremely important. This will help the nurse understand how to individualize patient care plans relative to the patient's culture. I hope to gain an understanding of common or rare health conditions and treatments relating to race, nationality, culture, religion and lifestyle. Although these factors broaden the characteristics of transcultural care, I do not intend to go into detail regarding specific cultures and their connections...... middle of article ......al ., 2013, p. 80).ReferencesAnsuya.
