Essay / Moral Issues in Technology: The Impact of Video Games on People
The topic I decided to address in this research paper is gaming and its impact on society by distracting people from their daily responsibilities. This subject is interesting because of the many concepts it allows me to explore. I will explore the different ethical dilemmas related to video games and how they affect people individually and how they affect society. Many people believe that video games can be correlated to the real-life violence that we all face on a daily basis. This topic interests me a lot because I play video games. A lot of people consider playing video games “nerdy,” but I can see the benefits for people with physical or mental illnesses in being able to interact with people without feeling inadequate. However, violence in video games is increasing and becoming the norm to take over your life. Unfortunately, video games pose many ethical problems. This topic also interests me since I'm torn on how I feel about it. I can also understand how video games can negatively affect people. When people are so far removed from real life and lack the experiences to play games, it can really affect society. Additionally, showing violence in videos can make people ethically afraid and unable to make moral decisions. I had a friend in high school who eventually dropped out to play World of Warcraft (WOW). The first is that video games are helping to end the alienation of people who are so immersed in technology or that video games are making us morally dull and violence has become a norm. I think more technology will reduce the alienation some people feel. I play a lot of video games and for several years I have been playing World of Warcraft. I noticed that I didn't see my friends much and that my love life took second place to my computer chair. I used it to escape daily responsibilities. Another important ethical issue concerns video game creators making video games more and more violent to address an increase in the oversaturation of violence in our society. Some of my friends were playing the game and I noticed that most of the time I didn't even play with them because I was only focused on my task in the game and if they couldn't help me I didn't want to play with them. Another topic covered in the documentary about digital worlds is the aspect of the military using drones to wage war. I understand that it's different from video games because it's a mix of virtual and real life aspects. The advantages of this
