  • Essay / Incarnation - 781

Everywhere in our world, people find it necessary to believe in some sort of immortal being or beings. For example, the Greeks trusted their gods and goddesses. As Catholics, we believe in the Trinity; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Being Catholics, we believe that Jesus descended to earth in the flesh through the Incarnation. Through On the Incarnation written by St. Athanasius, we explore and answer the question: Why was it necessary for God to become human for our salvation? In the first chapter of this book, Athanasius reveals how Jesus was present at Creation as the Word. Jesus and the Word are the same, just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all made of the same substance. This is evident in this statement made by Athanasius saying: “The renewal of creation was wrought by the same Word who did it in the beginning. » (Athanasius 2) The same man who was presented to us under the name Jesus, is the same being who was present at the beginning of creation. Jesus came to earth, essentially, to save us from ourselves. After the sins of Adam and Eve, corruption spread. “Men began to die and corruption was unleashed among them and dominated them to a degree even more than natural, for this was the punishment of which God had warned them for transgressing the commandment. » (Athanasius 5) Now, it was not that our God wanted to leave us to fend for ourselves, but he could not simply go back on the word he had spoken. “It would of course have been unthinkable for God to go back on his word and for man, having transgressed, not to die; but it was equally monstrous that beings who had once shared the nature of the Word should perish and return to non-existence in the middle of paper... of man. (Athanasius 34) It is entirely appropriate that Jesus should become incarnate, for it is through him that we have our being and it is through him that we live and are one. The Incarnation will always be a mystery to us, but we must try to understand it with the extent of our own human abilities. Jesus Christ, the Son, the second person of the Trinity, came down to save us from the corruption wrought in us by sin. He came 100% human and 100% divine.
