  • Essay / Psychology, Art, and the Church - 668

Psychology suggests that for an individual to live an essentially healthy life, they must be helped to make healthy choices that can create a whole, integrated person. The Church provides a belief system to an individual by instilling in him the faith and many moral guidelines which are respected and honored by him by more or less surrendering to that faith. Art is about conveying inner joys and demons in a way that can possibly confuse or make sense of the world while examining one's individuality. Individuals can combine different qualities from each of these schools to create a healthy and pure personality. Existentialism is a facet of psychology that emphasizes the idea that people are entirely free and therefore responsible for what they do with themselves. This responsibility comes with deep anxiety or fear. This is what the character of Meursault shows in The Stranger by Albert Camus. Meursault is a character known to be honest and psychologically detached from the universe around him. Something that would be considered an important event to most, like a marriage proposal or the death of a parent, has no sentimental value to him. He does not cry or shed tears (neither fake nor real) over the death of his mother and does not care that Mary loves him. Meursault is known for being amoral in which he does not distinguish between good and evil in his own mind. Although existentialism involves negative cognitive thinking, psychology remains an immense factor in creating someone's personality and Meursault describes this clearly with his traits. Rich Salazar, a college student, was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder after moving to another city in another state and not. ..... middle of paper ......marriage idea provoked by Marie. This has given him an amoral personality, meaning he does not illuminate right from wrong. The Church, however, suggests that by instilling a faith (such as Catholicism) in an individual and following the moral guidelines given, their personality is affected. This is what Rich Salazar shows in Through a Glass Darkly: How Catholics Struggle with Mental Illness by Anna Weaver. He found protection and safety by speaking to Father Schwartz at St. Mary's Church. Works Cited Billings, Lee. “Your music, your personality.” Psychology today.
